Right Angle Prisms: Structure, Working Principle & Applications
Right angle prisms have a rectangular cross-section, with two mutually perpendicular surfaces forming a 90° angle. They are commonly made from optical glass, fused silica and other infrared-transparent materials.

These prisms are mainly used to reflect and redirect light. Incident light refracts upon entry, then hits the perpendicular surface and reflects via total internal reflection. In accordance with the law of reflection, the output beam is deflected by 90° from its original path.

Commonly fitted in cameras, binoculars and telescopes, they realize image inversion, beam rotation, displacement and 90° beam combination. They are also widely used in lab research fields like spectroscopy and laser experiments.

    Processing Capability

JT provides optical prisms with various substrates and custom coatings. Our range includes right angle prisms, penta prisms, dove prisms, Powell lenses, corner cube prisms and wedge prisms. We supply multiple surface treatments: aluminum coating for hypotenuse and right-angle surfaces, alongside VIS, NIR and UV anti-reflection (AR) coatings. VIS and NIR AR coatings are also available on hypotenuse faces to suit different application requirements.
